With the needs and expectations of its customers always at the forefront, Doğtaş has developed a range of products and services firmly with those customers in mind. This is proven by their expertise in the field of furniture manufacturing, and particularly in their production of mattresses. In order to identify the sleeping habits of the Turkish public and to establish a “sleep map” for the country, Doğtaş has teamed up with the survey company, Ipsos, and carried out research with almost a thousand participants.
While explaining the findings of this research, Doğtaş Kelebek CEO Hulusi Acar emphasized the various health benefits of getting a good night’s sleep, and that the key to getting that all-important rest is having a mattress that’s right for you. Acar went on to talk about the range of mattresses offered at Doğtaş concept stores, which are designed to meet the various needs and expectations of customers, and stated, “The most important element in getting healthy sleep is having the right type of mattress, and we’re really prioritizing our R&D into this.”
According to the “Sleep Habits Survey” carried out by Doğtaş, 1 in every 2 people said they fall asleep within 10-15 minutes of getting in bed, while 9 in 10 thought the most basic requirement and the most influential factor in getting a good night’s sleep was the quality of their mattress. It was also found that 52% of Turks prefer sleeping on their side, while 33% sleep face-down, and the remaining 15% sleep on their backs. In addition to sleep, 46% of participants said they would also lie down and relax in bed. Sleeping habits varied from region to region; people in the Marmaris and Aegean regions like listening to music before bed, while those in Central Anatolia and the Black Sea prefer to read before switching off the lights.
8 is the magic number
According to the findings of the research, Turks sleep for an average of 8 hours per night. 67% of participants go to bed between 23:00 and 01:00, and 50% wake up between 07:00 and 09:00. 42% wake up with an alarm, whereas 4 out of 10 are able to wake up without the help of an alarm or another person. 1 in 2 manage to fall asleep within 10-15 minutes of getting in bed, and the same number of people said they get out of bed within the same time frame after waking up.
We love sleeping on our side!
Doğtaş’s “Sleep Habits Survey” also discovered some interesting facts about which position Turkey likes to sleep in. Sleeping on the side is the most popular position, with 52% of participants reporting this as their preference. Next was sleeping face down, with 33% of those surveyed choosing that position. Just 15% of participants reported sleeping on their backs.
A bed’s not just for sleeping
The research also revealed that 46% of people like to lay down and relax in bed. When asked what they do in bed other than sleeping, 41% of those surveyed said they talk on the phone while lying down, 31% enjoy listening to music and 30% watch television.
We replace our mattresses every 7 years
9 out of 10 people see the quality of their mattress as the most basic requirement and the most influential factor in getting a good night’s sleep. Those 9 out of 10 indicated that the most important factors while choosing a mattress are its orthopedic qualities, its firmness and its ability to provide a “weightless” feeling while sleeping.
When asked what qualities would be included the perfect mattress, those in Central and East Anatolia said “it would have to be soft”; those in the Mediterranean said “it has to make you feel relaxed”; while those in the Black Sea region said “it has adapt to the shape of your body, and should keep you cool”. 1 in every 2 of those who said they use a spring mattress explained that they purchased their current one within the last 5 years, and on average, people replace their mattress every 7 years. 4 out of 10 women indicated they sleep on the right side of the bed, and not surprisingly, single people prefer to sleep in the middle.
The Doğtaş’s great night’s sleep guarantee
After evaluating the research findings, Doğtaş Kelebek CEO Hulusi Acar explained the various health benefits of getting a good night’s rest, and that the key to getting that high-quality sleep is having the right mattress. He also emphasized that the research had shown that 9 out of 10 people see the quality of their mattress as the most basic requirement and the most influential factor in getting a good night’s sleep. Acar went on to say, “Just as with the rest of our products, when it comes to mattresses, it’s really important for us to understand what our customers are looking for and to present that in the products we offer. We wanted to hear what the Turkish people want from their mattresses, not just across the country, but from region to region. This research hammers home once again the effect a good night’s sleep has on the overall health of an individual. We know that good quality sleep is only possible with a good quality mattress, and so we’ve been using the latest technology to produce mattresses which will be as good as the day they were bought for many years. We also provide customers with a 45-day no-obligation guarantee. The fabric and spring technology used in our mattresses helps the body relax, keeps it warm in winter, cool in summer, and promises an uninterrupted night of healthy, natural sleep. Most recently, we developed a bed which supports the spine and muscle system of our younger customers. The Superteen mattress is the first and only one of its kind in Turkey. Its spring system is designed to adapt to the different weights and sleeping habits of teenagers to provide maximum comfort.” Acar finished by highlighting the fact that despite spending more than a third of our lives in bed, the decision to buy a mattress is often made in less than 5 minutes.
