Bambi Bedding, one of the pioneers of the Turkish bedding market, launched the “By Women’s Hands, With Their Labor.” project to preserve the Kilis quilt, which was registered as a geographical indication three years ago, valuing products with a story behind them. In collaboration with the Kilis Governor’s Office, the Ministry of Industry and Technology’s GAP Regional Development Administration, and the Kilis Humanitarian and Social Development Association, the project involves Kilis women producing quilts adorned with cultural motifs. With unique designs such as “Anatolia,” “Firuze,” and “Gypsy Girl,” the project both supports regional employment and carries the quilt-making culture into the future.
Bambi Bedding, one of Turkey’s leading bed brands, which transforms sleep into an art form, has embarked on a new project in collaboration with the Kilis Governorate, the Ministry of Industry and Technology’s GAP Regional Development Administration, and the Kilis Humanitarian and Social Development Association. The launch of “By Women’s Hands, With Their Labour” project, which aims to pass on the traditional Kilis quilt, shaped by needlework on satin fabric and in danger of being forgotten, to future generations with the motto ‘Women touch, touch the future’, took place at the Mahmut İslam Bey Mansion in Kilis. The launch, hosted by Bambi Bedding General Manager Cem Baş, was attended by Kilis Governor Tahir Şahin, GAP Regional Development Administration President Dr. Hasan Maral, Kilis Humanitarian and Social Development Association President Pınar Sadakaoğlu, and invited guests.

‘As a brand striving to bring the most innovative solutions to our customers, we are aware of our responsibility to society,’ said Cem Baş, General Manager of Bambi Bedding. “Anatolia’s thousands of years of history has brought many cultural elements of great importance to the present day. While a large part of these continue to exist today, unfortunately, a significant portion is in danger of being forgotten. Preserving these cultural elements and traditional handicrafts, ensuring cultural sustainability, and contributing to economic development are therefore of great importance. The traditional Kilis quilt, which holds a special place among our values, is an elegant piece of handicraft, shaped by needlework on satin fabric.
One of the most important reasons for launching this project was the threat of extinction facing the craft of quilt-making, a profession whose master artisans have dwindled over the years, leaving it without apprentices. With our “By Women’s Hands, With Their Labor” project, we aim to attract the interest of younger generations and carry quilt-making into the future by reinterpreting this ancient craft with modern designs. By blending Kilis quilts, crafted with love and care, with the ancient knowledge of Kilis artisans and members of the Kilis Humanitarian and Social Development Association, we aim to contribute to household economies and carry this elegant heritage into the future. Our project is not merely a commercial venture; it is a transformative step that will increase employment in the region and provide Kilis women, in particular, with opportunities for socialisation and economic empowerment through education and production. ‘Now, Kilis’ needle will thread the future,’ he stated.

Kilis Governor Tahir Şahin stated that the Kilis quilt is a valuable heritage that has warmed homes for centuries, adorned dowry chests at weddings, and is the pride of mothers and the sweat of master craftsmen. “This project is a powerful example of solidarity that brings together the labour of our women, the determination of our young people to learn, and the skill of our master craftsmen. Within the scope of the Traditional Handicrafts Project, the Kilis Quilt has been revived through the labour of our women, the experience of our master artisans, and the contribution of the academic world. The designs have been modernised to meet today’s needs and carried into the future without compromising cultural identity. One of the most valuable aspects of this work was the participation of our women in the production process, thereby making a strong contribution to employment, the family economy, and the value of women’s labour. The Kilis quilt, revived by the hard work and dedication of our women, will now warm not only our homes but also our lives. A collaboration agreement was signed with the Bambi brand for the modernised Kilis quilts produced within the scope of the project. Thus, Kilis quilts will find their rightful place not only in the local market but also nationally and internationally; they will open up to the world as a brand value. In this way, both our culture and women’s labour will be promoted on a global scale,” he said.
Traditional and modern, local and universal came together in the hands of Kilis women.
Dr. Hasan Maral, President of the GAP Regional Development Administration, emphasised the importance of the project and the support provided by Bambi Bedding in his speech, stating: “Kilis quilting is an ancient craft protected by a geographical indication; it is a cultural heritage that has been shaped by the hands of Kilis masters for centuries, bringing warmth to homes. However, in recent years, this valuable handicraft has faced the risk of extinction in the shadow of modernisation. As the Ministry of Industry and Technology’s GAP Regional Development Administration, we took action to preserve this heritage in collaboration with the Kilis Governor’s Office as part of our “Converting Endangered Local Weavings into Economic Value” programme. Recognising this potential, Bambi Bedding, a local and established brand, believed in the project and joined the process. Thus, an exemplary model centred on economic sustainability was born.
Bambi‘s decision to sell Kilis quilts in all its stores in Turkey and abroad was an important step in securing the future of this craft. Working shoulder to shoulder with Bambi designers as the GAP Administration, under the coordination of the Kilis Governorate. Inspired by the cultural riches of Southeast Anatolia, we blended the motifs of Oylum Höyük, Zeugma, Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe and Dara, dating back thousands of years, with modern lines, resulting in a brand new collection. In the hands of the women of Kilis, the traditional met the modern, the local met the universal. Our programme had previously revived local values such as the Siirt blanket, Şırnak Şal Şapik weaving, Şanlıurfa Culha, Ehram and Birecik Fabric. We apply the same formula each time: preserving local heritage, combining it with contemporary design and, most importantly, providing sustainable employment for the community.

Pınar Sadakaoğlu, President of the Kilis Humanitarian and Social Development Association, stated that the essence of the project was formed by the question, ‘Why don’t women do it?’ referring to quilting, traditionally considered a male craft. “We opened a quilting course for our women as part of a project implemented by the GAP Regional Development Administration and the Kilis Governor’s Office to empower women. We received support from quilting masters. The products we produced using quilting techniques began to emerge. At this point, we reinterpreted our traditional motifs with modern lines in collaboration with Bambi Bedding; the unique designs that emerged were transformed into legendary quilts that will be sold in Bambi stores. The quilt masters are proud to be able to pass on this unique craft, which was in danger of being lost, to future generations. The women, meanwhile, are delighted to be involved in production and to earn an income by working with a strong brand like Bambi Bedding. We, too, are delighted to be able to act as a bridge in this meaningful collaboration.”

Under the ‘By Women’s Hands, With Their Labor’ project, quilts produced by women from Kilis come to life with three distinct motifs rooted in cultural heritage. The quilt motifs feature figures symbolising abundance, fertility, productivity, and the richness of nature—hallmarks of Anatolian culture spanning thousands of years. In this vein, alongside the ‘Anatolia’ and “Firuze” models, the quilt named ‘Gypsy Girl’ was inspired by the ‘Gypsy Girl’ mosaic, discovered in 1998 at the ancient city of Zeugma and which has become one of the city’s important symbols. Uykuyu sanata dönüştüren çözümlerle Türkiye’nin öncü yatak markalarından olan Bambi Yatak, T.C. Bu projeyi hayata geçirmemizin en önemli nedenlerinden biri, yıllar içinde ustalarının sayısı giderek azalan ve çıraksız kalan yorgancılık mesleğinin yok olma tehlikesiyle karşı karşıya kalması oldu. ‘Kadın Eliyle, Emeğiyle’ projemizle, bu kadim zanaatı modern tasarımlarla yeniden yorumlayarak genç kuşakların ilgisini çekmeyi ve yorgancılığı geleceğe taşımayı hedefliyoruz. Sevgi ve özenle işlenen Kilis yorganlarını, Kilisli zanaatkârların ve Kilis İnsani ve Sosyal Gelişme Derneği üyelerinin kadim bilgisiyle harmanlayarak hem ev ekonomilerine katkı sunmayı hem de bu zarif mirası geleceğe taşımayı hedefliyoruz. Projemiz yalnızca ticari bir girişim değil; bölgedeki istihdamı artıracak, özellikle Kilisli kadınlara eğitim ve üretim yoluyla sosyalleşme ve ekonomik güçlenme fırsatı sağlayacak bir dönüşüm adımıdır. “Kilis yorganı hak ettiği yere kavuşacak”
Kilis yorganının asırlardır evleri ısıtan, düğünlerde çeyiz sandıklarını süsleyen, annelerin göz nuru ve ustaların alın teriyle yoğrulmuş çok kıymetli bir miras olduğunu belirten Kilis Valisi Tahir Şahin, “Bu proje; kadınlarımızın emeğini, gençlerimizin öğrenme azmini ve ustalarımızın maharetini bir araya getiren güçlü bir dayanışma örneği. Geleneksel El Sanatları Projesi kapsamında kadınlarımızın emeği, usta sanatkârlarımızın tecrübesi ve akademik dünyanın katkısıyla Kilis Yorganı yeniden hayat buldu. Tasarımlar modernize edilerek günümüz ihtiyaçlarına uyarlandı, kültürel kimlikten ödün verilmeden geleceğe taşındı. Bu çalışmanın en kıymetli yönlerinden biri, kadınlarımızın üretim sürecine katılması ve bu sayede istihdama, aile ekonomisine ve kadın emeğinin değerine güçlü bir katkı sağlaması oldu. Kadınlarımızın el emeği ve göz nuruyla yeniden can bulan Kilis yorganı artık yalnızca evlerimizi değil, hayatlarımızı da ısıtacak. Proje kapsamında üretilen modernize edilmiş Kilis Yorganları için Bambi markasıyla bir iş birliği anlaşması yapıldı. Böylece Kilis yorganı, yalnızca yerel pazarda değil, ulusal ve uluslararası ölçekte de hak ettiği yere kavuşacak; bir marka değeri olarak dünyaya açılacak. Böylelikle hem kültürümüz hem de kadın emeğimiz global ölçekte tanıtılacak” dedi.

GAP Bölge Kalkınma İdaresi Başkanı Dr. Hasan Maral, yaptığı konuşmada, projenin önemini ve Bambi Yatak’ın verdiği desteği şu sözlerle aktardı: “Kilis yorgancılığı, coğrafi işaretle tescillenmiş kadim bir zanaat; yüzyıllardır Kilisli ustaların ellerinde şekillenip evlere sıcaklık taşıyan kültürel bir miras. Ancak son yıllarda bu değerli el sanatı, modernleşmenin gölgesinde yok olma riskiyle karşı karşıya kaldı. Sanayi ve Teknoloji Bakanlığı GAP Bölge Kalkınma İdaresi Başkanlığı olarak, ‘Kaybolmaya Yüz Tutmuş Yerel Dokumaların Ekonomik Değere Dönüştürülmesi’ programımız kapsamında Kilis Valiliği ile birlikte bu mirası yaşatmak için harekete geçtik. Bu potansiyeli gören Bambi Yatak, yerli ve köklü bir marka olarak projeye inandı ve sürece dahil oldu. Böylece ekonomik sürdürülebilirliği merkezine alan örnek bir model doğdu. Bambi’nin Türkiye ve yurt dışındaki tüm mağazalarında Kilis yorganlarını satışa sunma kararı, bu zanaatın geleceğini güvence altına alan önemli bir adım oldu. Kilis Valiliği koordinasyonunda, Bambi tasarımcılarıyla GAP İdaresi olarak omuz omuza çalıştık. Erkek zanaatı olarak bilinen yorgancılığın “Kadınlar niye yapmıyor?” sorusu ile projenin özünü oluşturduğunu ifade eden Kilis İnsani ve Sosyal Gelişme Derneği Başkanı Pınar Sadakaoğlu, “GAP Bölge Kalkınma İdaresi Başkanlığı ve Kilis Valiliği’nin kadınların güçlenmesine yönelik uyguladıkları projede kadınlarımıza yönelik yorgancılık kursu açtık. Yorgan ustalarından destek aldık. Yorganlama tekniği ile ürettiğimiz ürünler ortaya çıkmaya başladı. Bu noktada, geleneksel motiflerimizi Bambi Yatak ile birlikte modern çizgilerle yeniden yorumladık; ortaya çıkan eşsiz tasarımlar, Bambi mağazalarında satışa sunulacak efsane yorganlara dönüştü. Yorgan ustaları, kaybolmaya yüz tutmuş bu eşsiz zanaatı gelecek kuşaklara aktarabilmenin gururunu yaşıyor. Kadınlar ise hem üretime katılmanın hem de Bambi Yatak gibi güçlü bir marka ile çalışarak ekonomik kazanç elde etmenin mutluluğunu taşıyor. “Kadın Eliyle, Emeğiyle” projesi kapsamında Kilisli kadınlar tarafından üretilen yorganlar, kültürel köklerden beslenen üç farklı motifle hayat buluyor. Yorgan motifleri, binlerce yıllık Anadolu kültürünün simgesi olan bolluğu, bereketi, verimliliği ve doğanın zenginliğini yansıtan figürlerden oluşuyor. Bu doğrultuda “Anatolia” ve “Firuze” modelleri ile birlikte “Çingene Kız” isimli yorgan ise Zeugma Antik Kenti’nde, 1998 yılında çıkarılan ve şehrin önemli simgelerinden biri haline gelen “Çingene Kızı” mozaiğinden ilham alınarak hayat buluyor. El emeği ve göz nuru ile üretilen Kilis yorganları, Bambi Yatak’ın konsept mağazaları ve web sitesi üzerinden satın alınabilecek.
